It is a completely different experience, every day I play it I am in awe of the size. It is very casual friendly (if thats what you want) and the developers seem to listen to player feedback.
If you do decide to join the server I am on is Death Wind Corridor (Empire).

No they cannot, PVP is a pretty big theme in this game, although you won't bump into many opposing faction players if your doing your class story. I'm Empire because a RL friend is.
